The Reversibility Test is a rule which the Women’s Media Centre project "Name It Change It" suggests journalists apply to help detect and omit gender stereotypes in reporting on women politicians. In essence, it reveals if the language or framing being applied to a woman would also be used for a man. For example: if a description of a woman candidate’s clothing, physical appearance, or family life is being included in a piece, think about if this would be included for a man in a similar circumstance.
This principle can also be applied in other situations as a simple test for identifying gender bias. For example, if discussing a woman colleague, consider if you would make the same remarks about a man.
